File Formats for Transfers

Waypoints, Routes, and Tracks can be exported and imported in various file formats by MacENCx64:

The GPX format for GPS data exchange

The GPX format, an XML-based GPS data formatting system, is becoming a standard format for exchanging data between GPS receivers, GIS, and other interactive web mapping applications. The GPX format allows GPS users to more easily share data extracted from their devices with other users, by eliminating the obstacles of device-specific file formats.

The KML format for geo-referencing

The KML file format created by Google Earth, a text file format also derived from XML, allows for describing a series of geo referenced objects. These can be simple landmarks like a building, an intersection, a peak, or even GPS tracks with or without altitude. Files in the KMZ format are ZIP-compressed KMLs. The KML format offers numerous features, becoming a true GIS (Geographic Information System). This format is on its way to becoming a standard.

The CSV (Comma-separated values) format

CSV is a computer file format representing tabular data. It is a very simple form of database, where each line is a record and fields are separated by a predefined character (usually a comma). This format is useful for exchanging data between databases that do not have any other file format in common. It is also an open format, meaning it is non-proprietary.

Note: The XML (eXtended Mark-up Language) is a markup language whose function is to separate the content (nature of the data) from the form (for example, the appearance or graphic rendering in a browser). Different tags correspond to the defined XML schema, in a way, the structure of the database. To ensure that there are no errors in the formatting of the schema and tags when integrating files, an XML validator is used.
